Facebook appointed Sheryl Sandberg after the social media behemoth drew criticism for having no women on its board. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has surrounded himself with extremely bright board members. However many of them, including Sandberg, have virtually identical backgrounds. Improving board decision-making requires diversity, ideally people with different ethnic and cultural backgrounds, viewpoints and expertise.
