Charles Bien is Managing Director of both Boyden Global Executive Search and Boyden Management Consulting for mainland China and Hong Kong.  He leads Boyden China’s Industrial Search Practice.  Prior to Boyden, Charles was Director of Human Resources at Caterpillar China and Yum! Brands Greater China (previously known as Tricon), and before that Principal Consultant at Hay Management Consultants Asia.  

An experienced consultant as well as practitioner, Charles has more than 20 years of experience in executive search, management consulting and corporate HR leadership.  He is experienced in all facets of people and organization management in particular executive recruitment, compensation and benefits, talent management, performance management, leadership and management development, and organization development.  He is also highly experienced in managing and operating in China, having been to more than 30 cities and was based in Shanghai for three years. With a home base in Hong Kong, Charles spends about half of his time in Boyden’s mainland China offices, shuttling between Hong Kong and mainland China almost on a weekly basis.

An active member of the management consulting and executive search communities, Charles is the Past President of Institute of Management Consultants Hong Kong, and a Board Member and Asia Pacific Honorary Treasurer of the Association of Executive Search Consultants – the worldwide trade association of retained executive search firms.

A Hong Kong born Chinese with a diverse international background, Charles has studied and worked in Hong Kong, PRC, Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom.  He obtained his master’s degree in Management Science and Engineering from Stanford University, his bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and has undertaken doctoral studies at the London School of Economics.  He is fluent in Mandarin Chinese, Cantonese dialect, Shanghainese dialect, as well as English.  Apart from work, Charles is a keen amateur guitarist of the classical style.
