Executive hiring news: Samsung’s new CEO trio

At its annual shareholders’ meeting, Samsung laid out plans for solidifying its leadership in the global electronics industry, with particular emphasis on mobile and consumer electronics. Soon afterwards it announced the promotions of J.K. Shin and Boo-keun Yoon, heads of mobile and consumer electronics respectively, as co-CEOs. The two will share the top spot with Oh-Hyun Kwon, who will continue to serve as Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Directors.

Global financial services corporation Citigroup Inc. announced in its most recent proxy filing that it is revising the methods it uses to determine compensation for employees in executive jobs. Shareholders have been very outspoken in the past few years, asserting that the company awards overly generous compensation to executives despite subpar stock performance. The new metrics, developed by the company’s Board of Directors, tie compensation to performance using more objective means of evaluation.

Yahoo CEO draws criticism for strict hiring practices

Marissa Mayer, Chief Executive Officer of Yahoo, has drawn criticism for insisting that job candidates hold degrees from prestigious universities. Hiring managers are concerned that because of her exacting standards, Yahoo could be missing out on much-needed talent. Hiring and retention have become major challenges at a time when the competition for both non-executive and executive talent in Silicon Valley is fierce. Rivals such as Google and Facebook present attractive options, as do the area’s many IPO-bound tech start-ups.

The outlook for executive hiring in Canada

A recent report focusing on the technology function in Canada looked at plans for executive hiring in the second quarter. Of the more than 270 CIOs surveyed, 74% said they intend to fill open IT positions, while 7% plan to add roles to expand their IT capabilities. Most executives showed optimism regarding their companies’ growth and IT investments. However, the difficulty of recruiting executives and non-executives with proficiency in emerging technologies is proving a considerable challenge.

Executive hiring news: Apple recruits communications director

Apple has reportedly hired Josh Rosenstock, Director of External Communications for the global power and aerospace company Rolls-Royce plc. The decision followed an executive search thought to be aimed at bolstering the tech icon’s corporate affairs capabilities. When he joins Apple in the coming weeks, Rosenstock will reportedly serve in the newly created executive position of Director of Corporate Communications for the Europe, Middle East, India and Africa (EMEIA) region.
