Effective 1 July 2004, GML Consulting Limited has merged with the Hong Kong and Mainland China operations of Boyden Global Executive Search. Charles Bien became the Managing Director of both Boyden Global Executive Search and Boyden Management Consulting.
Prior to re-joining GML Consulting, Charles was Director of Human Resources, Greater China, at Tricon Restaurants International (currently Yum! Global Restaurants), the US based brand owner and operator of Pizza Hut, KFC and Taco Bell restaurants, and one of the largest foreign employers in China. Before that, he was Director of Human Resources at the Hong Kong based Caterpillar China Limited.
Charles joined GML Consulting in the early 1990’s and spearheaded its China practices, which included human resources/organization consulting as well as business development/China entry assignments. He became a Director of GML in 1994 and left in 1995 to pursue his corporate career. Prior to GML, he was a Principal Consultant at Hay Management Consultants in Hong Kong.
An experienced consultant as well as practitioner, Charles has a total of 20 years’ experience in management consulting and corporate HR leadership. He is experienced in all facets of people and organization management in particular executive recruitment, compensation and benefits, talent management, performance management, leadership and management development, and organization development. He is also highly experienced in managing and operating in China, having been to more than 30 cities and was based in Shanghai for three years.
An active member of the management consulting community, Charles is currently the President of Institute of Management Consultants Hong Kong, and an Asia Pacific Council Member of the Association of Executive Search Consultants.
A Hong Kong born Chinese with a diverse international background, Charles has studied and worked in Hong Kong, PRC, Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom. Educated as an engineer, he secured his master’s degree in Management Science and Engineering from Stanford University, and his bachelor’s degree in Industrial and Operations Engineering from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He is fluent in Mandarin, Cantonese, Shanghainese, as well as English.
