Boyden is pleased to share the appointment news of Dr. Susan Moffatt-Bruce

Ottawa, CANADA July 26, 2019   Susan D. Moffatt-Bruce, BSc, MD, PhD, MBA, MBOE, FACS, FRCSC, will be the newly appointed Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada effective January 6, 2020. She succeeds Dr. Andrew Padmos, who will be completing his term in December 2019 after 13 years of exemplary service.

Dr. Moffatt-Bruce is a world-class leader and surgeon, with sharp business acumen and a passion for value-driven care. This role marks her return to Canada after more than a decade in the United States working as a clinician, professor, quality and safety officer, and hospital executive.

Dr. Moffatt-Bruce: Business-Minded Surgeon and QI Expert

Dr. Moffatt-Bruce joins the Royal College from The Ohio State University (OSU) Wexner Medical Center University Hospital — a flagship patient care facility with 700 beds and 70,000 annual admissions, providing quaternary clinical care — where she has served as executive director for the past two years. Prior to that, she was the OSU Wexner Medical Center’s first chief quality and patient safety officer. In that role, she led data analysis, transparent reporting of outcomes and process improvement for a seven-hospital academic medical centre. She and her team were celebrated for their success in reducing patient safety events and hospital re-admissions.

A funded research scientist, Dr. Moffatt-Bruce is also a practising thoracic surgeon who is listed among the top doctors in Columbus and Central Ohio. She is a professor of surgery and of biomedical informatics at OSU, and has developed curriculum for residents and faculty around quality and professionalism. She holds leadership positions in numerous national and international associations and is a member of the Royal College’s Fellowship Affairs Committee.

Dr. Moffatt-Bruce completed medical school and residency in General Surgery at Dalhousie University. She undertook a PhD in Transplant Immunology at the University of Cambridge, England, and completed her Cardiothoracic Surgery fellowship at Stanford University, California. She also trained at Intermountain Healthcare, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, Harvard School of Public Health. Dr. Moffatt-Bruce has a Six Sigma Black Belt certification. She earned her Masters of Business Operational Excellence and her Executive Masters of Business Administration at the Fisher College of Business at the Ohio State University.

She will be joined in Ottawa by her husband and two daughters.
