Ottawa, Ontario, July 18, 2019  -  Claude Brulé will become the ninth President and Chief Executive Officer of Algonquin College.

A 20-year-veteran of the College, Brulé has served as the College’s Senior Vice President, Academic since 2012.

“Algonquin College is an outstanding postsecondary institution, with an enviable reputation not only in the Ottawa Valley region and throughout the province, but also across the nation and internationally as well,” Brulé said at Thursday’s announcement at the College’s Ottawa Campus. “This is something we can never assume or take for granted, and I know that together, we will continue to safeguard and enhance our college’s brand and standing in all of the communities we serve.”

Brulé succeeds the retiring Cheryl Jensen as the College’s leader. Peter Nadeau, Chair, Algonquin College Board of Governors, thanked Jensen for her devoted service and outlined the Board’s vision for her successor.

“When our Board set out to find a new president, we wanted someone who embodied the College’s values of Caring, Learning, Integrity and Respect. In the end, we found a candidate who lives those values every day,” said Nadeau. “True leadership, of course, is leading by example. We found a candidate whose steadfast commitment and innovative ideas have helped transform this College – and continue to position it for more ground-breaking change. Someone who has been paramount in positioning Algonquin as a global leader in personalized, digitally connected and experiential learning.”

Brulé’s efforts are already working to transform the College. As Senior Vice President, Academic, he has guided the development of the College’s Learner Driven Plan – which will reimagine personalized learning at the College – and the implementation of a new 14-week term model that begins in September. Brulé comes to his new role with a deep knowledge of the College’s campuses and programs. For seven years, he has been responsible for the academic institutes, schools, faculties, and associated services.

Brulé has served the College at nearly every level of its leadership team. Prior to his role as Senior Vice President, Brulé was the Dean of the Faculty of Technology and Trades at Algonquin College (2007-2012), responsible for the School of Advanced Technology, the Algonquin Centre for Construction Excellence, and the Heritage Institute, a rural campus in Perth, Ontario.

Upon joining the College in August 1999, Brulé first served as the Academic Chair of the Information and Communications Technology Department (formerly the Computer Studies Department). Throughout his tenure at the College, Brulé has led several large projects and initiatives at either the Faculty or College level. His most significant achievements have been related to his involvement, as the main point of contact for the user group, in three major, high-performance building infrastructure projects, including the Algonquin Centre for Construction Excellence.

Prior to joining the College, Brulé was an officer in the Canadian Forces, in the Air Force occupational branch of Communication and Electronics Engineering, in a career that spanned 22 years. He graduated from the Royal Military College in Kingston in 1982 with a bachelor’s degree in Engineering Physics and again in 1990, earning a Master of Science in Mathematics. Among his many tours of duty over the years, he was an instructor at the Canadian Forces School of Communications and Electronics (CFSCE) from 1985 to 1987, and later on, the Senior Staff Officer for Strategic Planning and the Chief of Staff of the same school from 1993 to 1997. Between his two tours at CFSCE, he lectured in the Mathematics and Computer Science department as an assistant professor at the Royal Military College from 1989 to 1993.

Brulé will officially begin his term as President and Chief Executive Officer on Aug. 12, 2019.
