Announcement by Canadian Medical Protective Association, President, Dr. Debra Boyce and Vice President, Dr. Michael Cohen: 

Following an extensive international CEO search with preeminent candidates from all areas of healthcare, we are delighted to announce, on behalf of the CMPA Council, the appointment of Dr. Lisa Calder as the new CMPA CEO, effective August 31, 2020. She will also assume the position of Board Chair of Saegis, CMPA’s subsidiary.

We look forward to working alongside Dr. Calder in advancing the CMPA’s mission of protecting the professional integrity of our 100,000+ physician members and promoting safe medical care in Canada.

An outstanding and authentic leader

Dr. Calder is an award winning emergency physician, researcher, and teacher. She is an authentic and collaborative leader who is committed to improving healthcare for Canadian physicians and patients.

Since graduating from her Emergency Medicine residency at the University of Ottawa 15 years ago, Dr. Calder has steadily honed her knowledge and leadership skills—including obtaining a Master degree in Epidemiology, completing Fellowships in patient safety leadership, serving as an award winning Associate Professor, practising emergency medicine, and joining the CMPA as the Director of Medical Care Analytics. Dr. Calder is highly connected to the physician community and has a deep understanding of the opportunities and risks facing the CMPA, our members, and the healthcare system as a whole. Known for championing data-driven decisions, she appreciates the diverse and dynamic needs of members and stakeholders across the country.

Dr. Calder is attuned to the changing realities and needs of physicians and the system in which they practice, and she knows that these changes bring new opportunities for CMPA support. She looks forward to embracing these opportunities and ensuring the CMPA is agile as it evolves to remain relevant in a dynamic healthcare environment.

Enhanced focus on collaboration to increase CMPA’s impact

Throughout her career, Dr. Calder has established herself as a collaborator. Under her leadership, the CMPA will continue to actively collaborate with other organizations and forge new partnerships to improve the environment in which our members practice. She is also keen to share learnings from medical-legal experiences with members and stakeholders to advance improvements in the quality of care and enhance patient safety.
