Drawing on internal talent, US apparel retailer Gap Inc. has appointed Sonia Syngal as President of its Old Navy division. The post has been held by an interim manager since September, when Stefan Larsson became CEO of Ralph Lauren. Syngal was Executive Vice President of Gap’s global supply chain and product operations, and previously served as Senior Vice President of Old Navy’s international division.
Gap also named Michael Yee as Executive Vice President of its global supply chain, sourcing and production. Shawn Curran will take the role of Executive Vice President of global supply chain logistics and product operations, Bloomberg reports.
Recruiting an executive to lead Old Navy is crucial at a time when Gap has been struggling to achieve a successful turnaround as it loses customers to other chains and e-commerce rivals. While Old Navy, a budget chain which sells casual clothing, was one of Gap’s more successful chains, its growth has faltered of late. Sales at the chain have fallen four of the last five months.
“Following a comprehensive search, I’m confident Sonia is the right leader to enable Old Navy to realize its substantial, long-term growth potential”, Gap CEO Art Peck said in the statement. Interim chief Jill Stanton will serve as a strategic adviser during Syngal’s transition.
