February 17, 2021 - Edmonton, AB

Announcement by Dr. David Chalack, Board Chair, RDAR:

Since RDAR was established, we have committed to being open and transparent. So, it is with great excitement that I, RDAR Board Chair, with our Board of Directors are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Mark Redmond as the Chief Executive Officer of RDAR effective March 1, 2021.

Dr. Gerald Hauer, who has been the interim CEO since April 1, 2020, will assist Mark during the transition. The Board extends its deepest appreciation to Gerald for his stellar leadership and for guiding RDAR’s development over the last 11 months.

RDAR is a new organization. Incorporated less than a year ago, we have made bold strides to guide Alberta agriculture research in a new direction. For each milestone we achieved this past year, we can clearly contribute our successes to the experience, talent, and dedication of our collaborative team and partnerships.

At RDAR, we take great pride in having built a strong and capable team from the ground up. In searching for our permanent CEO, we took our time to conduct a thorough executive search for the right leader to assume this important role. In Mark we see a leader who will continue to drive RDAR forward. He will continue RDAR’s dedication of collaborating with producers, scientists, and researchers, and will push the boundaries of Alberta’s agriculture potential, while staying solidly producer-led and results-driven.

“Congratulations to RDAR for selecting a new CEO with great experience in agriculture research and innovation. Mark is just what RDAR needs to hit the ground running, ensuring results in the lab are reflected in the field.

And thank you to the interim CEO, Dr. Gerald Hauer, for all the hard work, dedication, and leadership he showed while setting up RDAR. He helped create an organization that will truly make a difference in Alberta’s agriculture industry.”

Devin Dreeshen, Alberta Minister of Agriculture

Mark joins RDAR as a seasoned professional with 25-plus years’ experience in senior business, research, and academic positions involving the agriculture industry. Most recently, Mark held the position of Director of Incubation Service at PEI. BioAlliance, leading bio-based research across Atlantic Canada. He has strong ties to Alberta academia, holding the position of Associate Dean at NAIT’s School of Health from 2016-2018, and Adjunct Professor positions at the University of Alberta (2011-2017) and the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (1993-1996).

During the interview process, we discovered that Mark is a strategic and systems thinker, a networker, a connector, and a synergist, with a fervent commitment to using research and its innovative application to better human, animal, and environmental conditions.

After several meetings, we knew that we had finally found the right person to assume the leadership role expertly carved out by Gerald, our interim CEO. Fostering a smooth leadership transition at RDAR is of utmost importance. Mark has a calm, disciplined and confident nature that shines through. On behalf of the Board, we know that Mark will continue strengthening our connections to producers, educational institutions, and industry to drive forward our common goal: to make Alberta agriculture as profitable and competitive as possible.

Through commitment and hard work, the founders of RDAR have created a remarkable organization. I am excited to be part of this group, to build on this foundation, and to extend RDAR’s commitment to excellence and resolve to respond to the needs of Alberta’s producers.

I look forward to meeting and engaging with the agriculture industry, research community, and government. Together we will build strong relationships based on trust and understanding and fulfil RDAR’s vision for Alberta: to see our agriculture and food sectors achieve their full potential through producer-led investments in research and innovation.”

Mark Redmond, RDAR CEO

With a significant portion of his career in animal health and value-added agriculture products, Mark looks forward to working with Alberta farmers, ranchers, researchers, and government in the vital work of accelerating Alberta’s agriculture research potential and growing innovation from the roots up.

Mark has led organizations through challenges and change; strategic and business planning; financial stewardship and economic analysis; and industry partner communication at all levels. He has worked extensively with Boards in the public and private sector, providing strategic advice, briefings, and reports, as well as serving as Chair and Board member. He has also served extensively on Federal and Provincial government committees developing policy recommendations. Mark is very well positioned to lead our team, and we will benefit from his wealth of experiences.

Alberta and the prairies have been Mark’s home for 39 years. His wife’s family farm is near Calmar, AB.

Please join us in welcoming Mark Redmond to the RDAR team!
