Below provides a profile of the North America regional market overall, and interesting facts and information about issues important to both United States and foreign executives working in Atlanta.
Atlanta is the fastest growing city in the United States. Between 2000 and 2006 the population of the city has increased over 20%. It is the largest city in Georgia and has traditionally been the gateway to the southeastern US.
But in recent years, Atlanta has undergone a transition from a regional hub of commerce to a city of international influence. It boasts the world’s busiest airport — Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport — in both passenger traffic and aircraft operations. Hartsfield Airport has, in many ways, displaced other US airports like JFK in New York and O’Hare in Chicago as the primary entry points to the US.
The Greater Atlanta metro area ranks third in the US in number of Fortune 500 companies headquartered within city boundaries, behind New York City and Houston. Several major national and international companies are headquartered in Atlanta or its nearby suburbs, including three Fortune 100 companies. Over 75% of the Fortune 1000 companies have a presence in the Atlanta area, and the region hosts offices of about 1,250 multinational corporations.
From telecom to finance to manufacturing, Atlanta is at the forefront of business in the US. And of course, Atlanta is also the hub for cable television news and other programming, with Turner Broadcasting and CNN based here.
