About the Waterloo Regional Police Service

Established in 1973, the Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) provides community policing services to the approximately 617,879 residents of the Waterloo Region. The seventh largest police Service in Ontario, WRPS has a 2021 budget of over $185 million and is comprised of over 1,000 members (785 sworn members and 381 civilian) dedicated to delivering effective policing services while embracing partnerships and community engagement that strengthen public safety and community wellbeing.

The WRPS believes strongly in community policing and is committed to making a difference in the many diverse and vibrant neighbourhoods of Waterloo Region. It serves the municipalities of Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge and the Townships of Wellesley, Wilmot, Woolwich and North Dumfries.

Waterloo Regional Police Services Board

The Police Services Board is a civilian oversight body that governs how police services are provided. Under the provisions of the Ontario Police Services Act, the Board is comprised of three elected members from Regional Council, three provincially-appointed members and one community-at-large member, appointed by Regional Council.

The Police Board meets regularly with the Chief of Police and the Deputy Chiefs of Police to determine the current and future direction of policing in Waterloo Region in terms of law enforcement, crime prevention and the police budget.
