Priority Criteria

Education: A Master’s degree in Education. As required by the BC School Act, good standing as a certified teacher in the K-12 school curriculum system.

Experience: The ideal candidate is an accomplished, passionate educator currently in a district level, executive leadership role as a Superintendent/CEO or reporting to a Superintendent/CEO, and brings a track record of success at all levels of the K-12 education system as a passionate advocate of Truth and Reconciliation, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Anti-Racism.

Strong Leadership Skills: Highly effective leadership skills with the ability to align people in an organization behind a vision; strong team builder and accountable. Highly authentic with a strong sense of humility. Strong motivating skills, effective delegator; sets high standards. Empathetic; collaborative; consultative; sensitive to others; consistent in approach. As a leader has been inspirational and readily acknowledges work done by all employee groups.

Visionary and Strategic Thinker: A visionary who has the ability to conceptualize the future of public education and to provide effective, innovative and progressive advice to an elected governance Board. Demonstrated strategic planning with long term goals, short term goals and clearly articulated pathways to success. An advocate for public education with a strong commitment to providing equal educational opportunity to all children.

Superior Relationship Skills:  A people person who will be visible and approachable across the organization and in the community.  Possesses the presence and stature to build relationships and generate respect among various partner groups including trustees, Host Nations, government officials, school administrators, teachers, support staff, unions and parent representatives.  Demonstrates commitment to consultation and is effective at consulting with internal and external parties regarding needs and expectations.  Committed to building positive, collaborative relations.

Strong Financial Acumen:  Understands the government’s fiscal framework and budgeting process for School Districts; strong sense of accountability for the effective utilization of the resources of the School District; able to align financial planning with identified priorities; able to provide progressive financial planning advice to a governance Board.

Communication Skills: Transparent in their communication with all partner groups. An open and direct communicator with excellent presentation skills; a good and active listener. Comfortable operating in a highly visible role.

Interpersonal Skills:  Excellent interpersonal skills; accessible and approachable by parents, teachers, staff and students. Able to work with others as a representative of the District and respect views of others objectively and respectfully. Willing to listen to other ideas and actively seek out opportunities to learn from others.

Politically Astute:  Understands the political dynamics of an elected governance board and is effective working in conjunction with the Board of Education. Possesses the ability to build consensus in a complex organization with many stakeholders. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a variety of Indigenous communities.

Personal Characteristics:  Passionate about public education. Patient and persistent while advancing initiatives and achieving results. A reputation for integrity, openness and transparency; authentic and well-grounded. A personal educational philosophy that is aligned with the vision, mission and values of the School District combined with skills in developing and carrying out long term strategic plans.
