Nova Scotia Pension Services Corporation (NS Pension) is pleased to announce the appointment of Steve Mahoney as its new Chief Investment Officer (CIO), effective April 1, 2022. He will take over the CIO role from Elizabeth Vandenberg, who is retiring after serving two decades with NS Pension and its predecessors in various investment management positions.

Mr. Mahoney is an investment professional who has worked for more than 20 years in the field of institutional plan investment and actuarial services. He has deep experience in all traditional and alternative forms of asset classes. He also served on the Nova Scotia Teachers’ Pension Plan Trustee Board and its Investment Committee from 2016 to 2021.

“I am very pleased to have Steve joining us to lead our Investment Division,” said NS Pension CEO, Doug Moodie. “His knowledge and understanding of our organization, our pension plans, and our investment strategies, combined with his broad expertise and experience in the investment and actuarial fields, makes him the right choice for our Executive Team.”

“I am honoured to be appointed as NS Pension’s next CIO and look forward to building upon the success of my predecessor and the team of investment professionals working at NS Pension,” said Mr. Mahoney. “I am excited to be returning to Nova Scotia and to have the opportunity to help strengthen the retirement futures of our plan members.”

Mr. Mahoney was born and raised in Nova Scotia. His career started with the Maritime Life Assurance Company as an Investment and Actuarial Analyst. He then moved on to Keel Capital as a Risk Manager and then to the Halifax Regional Municipality Pension Plan also as a Risk Manager. He spent 6 years at Morneau Shepell (now LifeWorks) as a Partner in their investment consulting division. Since 2015 Mr. Mahoney has been with Connor, Clark & Lunn Financial Group in Toronto as Vice President of Institutional Sales.

Mr. Mahoney’s education includes a Bachelor of Science (Mathematics) degree from Mount Allison University and a Bachelor of Education degree from St. Francis Xavier University.
