CHEO is currently seeking to fill four vacancies on its Board of Directors.
In light of upcoming vacancies, there is specific interest in recruiting individuals who would bring a high level of competency and credibility in one or more of the following areas:
- Cybersecurity Oversight: Experience in executive or governance roles involving cybersecurity risk, data protection, and digital safety. Candidates may bring a strategic understanding of evolving threats and best practices in safeguarding systems and stakeholder information in high-trust, public-facing environments.
- Indigenous Perspective and Lived Experience: CHEO is committed to reconciliation and to providing culturally safe care for Indigenous children, youth, and families – particularly in northern and rural communities. The Board welcomes expressions of interest from individuals who bring an Indigenous lens, grounded in lived experience, community connection, and/or leadership within First Nations, Inuit, or Métis contexts.
Director Attributes
CHEO’s Board composition reflects a thoughtful blend of competency, community representation, and lived experience. The Board is firmly committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion, and strives to reflect the diverse populations CHEO serves. Individuals from all backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply. Previous governance experience is mandatory.
Candidates, regardless of career background or skillset, will bring the following:

- Interpersonal qualities such as emotional intelligence, open-mindedness, compassion, cultural sensitivity, and civic awareness.

- Awareness of contemporary healthcare issues, informed by professional and/or lived experience, with the ability to contribute valuable perspective on emerging challenges and opportunities in the sector.
- Demonstrated commitment to community involvement, through volunteer, advisory, or advocacy roles with not-for-profit, grassroots, or public sector organizations. Brings a perspective grounded in lived experience and community engagement, contributing to CHEO’s mission of supporting children, youth, and families beyond clinical care.
- Experience and/or formal training in board governance, with a solid understanding of governance principles, fiduciary responsibilities of the board and individual directors, and associated organizational risks.
- Senior executive experience, ideally at the C-suite level, bringing the ability to navigate the dynamics of large, complex, multi-stakeholder organizations; interpret budgets and financial statements; and contribute meaningfully to decisions on strategy, policy, operations, and human resources.
- Demonstrated commitment to advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility, anti-colonialism, and anti-racism. Supports CHEO’s efforts to close gaps in health outcomes for marginalized communities and promote equitable opportunities for all clients, staff, and volunteers.
The Board’s overriding consideration in confirming new Directors is credibility, relevant experience, and the capacity to serve in alignment with CHEO’s evolving governance needs. All candidates must demonstrate the qualifications, time commitment, and leadership required to govern an institution of CHEO’s size, complexity, and public accountability.
