Purpose of Position:
The Chief Investment Officer will set the vision for and execute InBC’s strategic investment fund strategy, working as a critical member of the leadership team in partnership with the CEO to deliver on the triple bottom‑line mandate within the guardrails of the Investment Policy Statement (IPS) as defined by the Ministry and InBC’s Board of Directors. This role works closely with the CEO and leadership team members to align the investment strategy with the organizational strategy and goals.
The CIO will manage a complex and significant investment fund portfolio covering all sectors and growth stages of BC companies. Performance will be measured by both financial targets and non‑financial impact objectives, including reconciliation, diversity, job creation, and environmental outcomes.
Key Accountabilities
Investment strategy execution
- Contributes to the development of the Investment Policy Statement (IPS) and provides ongoing recommendations for updates or changes.
- Oversees, defines, and delivers a vision for InBC’s impact investment strategy within the guardrails of the IPS and the statutory framework.
- Oversees, defines and delivers an impact investment strategy designed to deliver on all socioeconomic targets within InBC’s triple bottom line mandate.
- Delivers the IPS including selecting, approving, and managing all investment decisions, ensuring alignment with InBC’s strategic objectives.
- Oversees due diligence activities to facilitate investment decisions.
- Responsible for ensuring the team’s activities are compliant with all applicable policies and legislation, working closely with the finance team.
- Oversees and monitors the overall performance of InBC’s portfolio of investments, and takes actions as required to maintain and deliver on InBC’s investment objectives.
Leadership
- Oversees and develops a high performing investment team capable of delivering on the investment strategy.
- Provides leadership and overall supervision of the investment team, including setting performance metrics, hiring, mentoring, and staff development in adherence with InBC’s standards of conduct and contributes to a strong and collaborative culture.
- Contributes to the organizational strategy and operations as a valued member of the leadership team.
- Provides expertise and mentorship on all investment activities.
Organizational growth & sustainability
- Supports InBC’s goal of long-term sustainability.
- Works with the CEO to develop strategic partnerships and to leverage investment partnerships to crowd in investment and increase the overall funding available to BC businesses.
- Keeps the CEO and board informed of any market or impact related risks that could impact InBC’s capital investments.
- May work closely with management teams of portfolio companies in an advisory role, or participate on boards or advisory committees, in order to implement value-creation plans, monitor financial and operational performance, and help with growth initiatives
- Actively engages in the community and ecosystem to build confidence and momentum for the organization’s growth and identify investment targets.
- Identifies and considers new opportunities to advance InBC’s investment objectives.
