Key Opportunities & Challenges

After consulting with key stakeholders at North Vancouver School District No. 44, The following opportunities and challenges have been identified for the new Superintendent/CEO: 

Foster Trustee engagement and support.

The Board of Education is comprised of seven Trustees, four representing the District of North Vancouver and three representing the City of North Vancouver. The new Superintendent/CEO will work closely with the Trustees to ensure the business of the NVSD is conducted in an efficient, functional, inclusive and collaborative manner.

Community Partnerships.

The NVSD has strong relationships with multiple community partners including the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and səl̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. The NVSD are committed to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's calls to action and have an annual dedication for a Truth and Reconciliation week in the District. As well, partnerships with the City of North Vancouver and the District of North Vancouver, and their respective library systems, the North Vancouver Recreation and Culture Commission, Capilano University, and community businesses. The new Superintendent/CEO will have the opportunity to continue to build on these partnerships to develop the academic and personal success of all students.

Work with a strong, cohesive leadership team.

The NVSD executive and extended leadership teams are well-aligned on the direction of the Board of Education's strategic goals. An environment of constructive discussions, mutual respect and understanding of purpose currently exist. The new Superintendent/CEO will be responsible for maintaining this collegial atmosphere and tenor. It will be important for the new Superintendent/CEO to continue the journey of building a more meaningful approach to Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Anti-Racism and Mental Health in the school district.

Positioned to be a “Natural Place to Learn”.

For many years, the NVSD has been viewed as a model district in the province due to its sound fiscal management, engaged senior leadership and administration, and exceptional educators. In addition, through the emergence of enriched educational programming, and developing relationships with the North Vancouver Administrators’ Association (NoVA), the North Vancouver Teachers Association (NVTA), the North Vancouver Parent Advisory Council (NVPAC), Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) and the District Student Leadership Council, the NVSD is well positioned to continue to build its reputation as a leader in public education in the province.

Financially sound district.

The NVSD is on a sound financial footing. The Board of Education, district leadership, school administrators, teachers and staff have found creative and innovative ways to be fiscally judicious.

Continue to enhance relationships with employee groups.

The new Superintendent/CEO will be looked at as someone who brings a progressive, transparent, inclusive and collaborative approach to working with employee groups within the NVSD. Fostering sound working relationships with NoVA, the NVTA, and CUPE and supporting employee mentorship and career development will be critical to the continued success of the NVSD.
