Announcement by Dr. Petra Hauf, Provost and Vice-President Academic, University of New Brunswick:

I am pleased to announce that Dr. Adam Donaldson will be joining UNB as dean of graduate studies for a five-year term, effective Jan. 1, 2026.

Dr. Donaldson is currently associate dean academic with the faculty of graduate studies at Dalhousie University, where he also holds a professorship in chemical engineering. Over the past decade, he has built a reputation as a collaborative leader and advocate for graduate education, with a strong focus on academic quality, inclusive excellence and student-focused service.

His leadership at Dalhousie has included oversight of graduate academic programming, scholarship administration and strategic initiatives, such as the development of a part-time PhD framework, the modernization of academic policies and the implementation of digital platforms for scholarship applications. He has also served as acting dean of the faculty of graduate studies on two occasions, supporting over 130 graduate programs and more than 4,000 students.

As an advocate of community-based scholarship and accessible education, Dr. Donaldson has worked with campus and community partners to support equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives, such as the BIPOC mentorship academy and community-led scholarship programs. He has also championed transition supports and the launch of admission pathways and programming that better meet community needs.

Dr. Donaldson’s research includes chemical reaction engineering, process optimization and multiphase systems, with active collaborations in Japan, Germany and across Canada. He has led or contributed to numerous funded projects through NSERC, Mitacs and industry partnerships, and has supervised a wide range of graduate and undergraduate research.

Beyond his academic roles, Dr. Donaldson has served as president of Engineers Nova Scotia and contributed to national and international conferences as a chair and keynote speaker. He is a fellow of Engineers Canada and has received multiple awards for service and research excellence.

Dr. Donaldson is enthusiastic about joining UNB and engaging with our graduate community to support the university’s Towards 2030 vision. His experience in academic governance, interdisciplinary collaboration and student mentorship will be a valuable asset as we continue to strengthen graduate education at UNB.

I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Dr. Kevin Englehart for his dedicated service and leadership as acting dean of graduate studies since July 2024. We are grateful for his continued commitment to the School of Graduate Studies as he returns to his previous role as associate dean.

Please join me in welcoming Dr. Donaldson to our academic community.
