This year’s Africa Mining Indaba showed the significant role that mining continues to play in economic development on the continent and beyond.
The richness of debate, the commitment of investors, the great capability of our mining leaders, and the vibrancy and excitement in the junior mining space, proved again the strength and opportunity of the industry, despite the intense challenge over the last number of years. This was the third time I had attended the Mining Indaba as part of the Boyden leadership consulting team to the industry. As one client commented, “Good skills and infrastructure are as important as the regulatory and legislative environments”.

More and more countries are realizing the need to attract large mining projects to build their economies, with large corporates becoming, in a very real way, ‘brand ambassadors’ for these countries, contributing meaningfully to promoting investment and economic progress.

What drives investment?

A truly complex matter and it shaped the discussion as leaders explored a myriad of topics including technology and mechanization of mines, in-country beneficiation, emerging markets, the role of regulation and legislation, and women in mining. We also discussed the impact of global developments, such as the political environment in various African countries and abroad, China’s growing participation and rare earth exploration and development. Subsequent to the Indaba, our new President in South Africa and the appointment of a new Minister to the lead the Department of Minerals and Resources, has led to a real uptick in business confidence and improved economic growth projections.

As always, it was a fascinating four days and I will be reflecting on key topics from now until Mining Indaba 2019!

Next up, women in mining. This blog will feature interview excerpts from women who have made it in our industry.
