About the University of British Columbia (UBC)

About the University of British Columbia (UBC)

The University of British Columbia (UBC) is a globally-renowned teaching, learning and research university, consistently ranked among the top 20 public universities in the world. Founded in 1908, the University opened its doors in 1915. Today, UBC is home to over 70,000 students at its Vancouver and Okanagan campuses, over 20,000 employees, a budget approaching $4 billion, and over 400,000 alumni in more than 145 countries.

UBC’s campuses are situated within the traditional territories of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh, and in the traditional, ancestral, unceded territory of the Syilx Okanagan Nation and their peoples. Pursuing reconciliation is a collective university responsibility, a commitment that runs through all areas of the university, and pursuing excellence through diversity and a commitment to a just society are embedded across the university.

UBC transforms ideas into action through research and innovation. Last year, UBC has hit record research funding of over $936M towards over 10,000 research projects across all faculties on both campuses, including Medicine, Science, Arts, Law, Applied Science, Business and many others. Over the past 20 years, UBC researchers have also created 284 spin-off companies that are a result of the university's innovation ecosystem, which aims to turn research discoveries into real-world products, services, and therapies.

The University boasts 8 Nobel laureates, 75 Rhodes Scholars including 4 in the last 5 years, 23 3M National Teaching Fellows, 313 Royal Society of Canada Fellows, 3 Canadian prime ministers, and 66 Olympic medals won by varsity athletes, including 19 gold medals.

UBC is a dynamic place to learn, reflect, discover and potentially transform the world; an incredible community of distinguished researchers, teachers, students, staff and alumni.

Strategic Plan

UBC’s Strategic Directions 2025–2030 outlines the university’s priorities for the next five years, building on the foundation of Shaping UBC’s Next Century while responding to a changing world. Informed by extensive community engagement in 2024 and 2025, this refreshed plan is both a continuation and a forward-looking evolution—designed to guide how UBC teaches, learns, researches, and connects with communities near and far.

The plan reaffirms UBC’s commitment to long-standing institutional priorities, including the Indigenous Strategic Plan, UBC Okanagan’s Declaration of Truth and Reconciliation Commitments, the Climate Action Plan 2030, the Strategic Equity and Anti-Racism Framework, the Wellbeing Strategic Framework, the Focus on People, and other core initiatives that remain essential to the university’s mission. At the same time, it introduces seven new strategic directions that highlight where UBC will focus its energy and innovation between now and 2030.

Each direction is intentionally broad—allowing faculties, departments, and units across both campuses to shape specific, measurable actions that reflect their strengths and ambitions. Together, these priorities aim to position UBC for continued impact in a complex and fast-moving world.

Seven Strategic Directions

  1. Discover and Innovate for Impact
Accelerate excellence in research, scholarship, and teaching that leads to real-world change—economically, socially, and environmentally.
  2. Enhance Experiential Education
Expand hands-on learning opportunities that help students build the knowledge, skills, and confidence to navigate an increasingly complex society and workforce.
  3. Create Flexibility for Learners
Increase program options, interdisciplinary pathways, and learner agency—making it easier for students to shape an education that fits their goals and circumstances.
  4. Maximize UBC System Strengths
Leverage the unique strengths of UBC’s Vancouver and Okanagan campuses while fostering collaboration across all learning sites in British Columbia.
  5. Excel in the Development and Application of Emerging Technologies
Advance the creative, responsible use of technologies such as AI in teaching, research, operations, and student learning.
  6. Nurture a Strong and Vibrant UBC Community
Strengthen the sense of connection and belonging among students, faculty, and staff—and continue building a campus culture grounded in wellbeing and shared purpose.
  7. Partner for Purpose
Grow and deepen strategic partnerships that meet the evolving needs of communities in British Columbia, across Canada, and around the world.

These strategic directions are designed to be dynamic, with progress reviewed annually and space built in for adaptation. They reflect the university’s shared belief that UBC is at its best when its people work together to shape a more just, sustainable, and innovative future.
