Position Description
General
The Director, Supply Chain Optimization is responsible for ensuring that the extensive range of data that is and will be collected and shared by Land, Marine and Security Operations is effectively utilized. This role will focus on creating and providing business solutions based on an understanding of user needs and understanding the information available to provide insight and intelligence both internally and externally based on data from a variety of internal and external sources such as the Supply Chain Visibility Program (SCVP), Geotab (GPS), Drayage Model, TCEF Blockchain, Active Vessel Management, Vessel Forecasting, etc. The Director will liaise both internally and externally to support efforts to increase data literacy in the gateway and enable collaboration with interested stakeholders.
Specific Accountabilities
Supply Chain Digitalization & Transformation Initiatives
- Develop, sustain necessary approvals and support for, and implement a digital transformation strategy that addresses the requirements of VFPA’s Land, Marine and Security operations groups and supports VFPA’s objective of developing an “Insight driven Gateway.”
- Demonstrate the value of data and analytics by providing expertise, solutions and capabilities where there are opportunities to infuse data intelligence to make better business decisions.
- Work closely with senior business and technology leaders within the organization to advance the quality and use of critical data to support the delivery of Business Strategy, Supply Chain Transformation, Operations Improvement/Turnaround, Change Management projects and programs.
- Utilize cross-functional knowledge and partnerships to understand, synthesize, and communicate data trends, perspectives, and issues that drive meaningful impact to the business.
- Drive digital transformation across the Port’s supply chain to help increase capacity, improve efficiency, decision making and cost-effectiveness.
- Drive operational improvement through the more effective and creative use of data while playing a key role to help shape and influence key strategic initiatives, such as SCVP and other data sources.
- Drive end-to-end process capabilities, resiliency and digital innovation required to advance operational excellence across the whole organization.
Project Delivery
- Identify, lead, and manage departmental projects focused on data analytics.
- Manage external service providers, contractors and consultants in providing products, services and support to departmental projects.
Leadership and Management
- Represent VFPA on regional and national performance forums, committees and industry matters pertaining to the Port and Vancouver Gateway.
- Participate in the development of VFPA’s strategic priorities and be responsible for the development and implementation of activities and programs designed to meet the intention of specific strategic priorities.
- Participate as a member of the Leadership Team in the strategic and operational direction of the business.
- Demonstrate health and safety leadership through visible actions, participation in health and safety initiatives and conducting regular safety conversations with your employees. Ensure your employees have appropriate resources, tools, training and education to conduct their work in a safe manner.
- Plan, implement and review departmental staffing requirements for areas of responsibility, including the determination of clear position descriptions, accountabilities and reporting arrangements to optimize service delivery to all stakeholders.
- Lead and manage subordinates, ensuring that team and individuals are motivated, have defined position descriptions and reporting arrangements, their performance goals are clear and actively managed and development needs are defined and addressed.
- Represent VFPA in negotiations, at conferences and conventions, and in the media as required, ensuring clear communication of the business strategy and key messages, and the presentation of a positive and professional image of the business.
- Liaise with human resources on employee relations (selection, training, performance management, conflict resolution, etc.) and labour relations matters.
- Plan and review departmental operating costs, particularly with regard to staffing requirements, overheads, consultancy services, planned business programs and service provision.
- Articulate and live the VFPA culture and values, set an example by modelling the required behaviours and hold others (staff and peers) accountable for their actions by identifying and acting on behaviour which is inconsistent with agreed standards and values.
- Provide an active and positive leadership example within the wider Port community, clearly communicating VFPA’s strategy and key elements of VFPA’s business plan, ensuring VFPA’s ability to deliver improvements through influence as well as direct control.
