PHF Science is a nationally significant science organisation whose impact is strengthened through a broad network of long-term partnerships across New Zealand and internationally.
Its partnership model spans government agencies, iwi and communities, universities, research institutes, NGOs and international organisations, reflecting a strong emphasis on combining scientific expertise with local knowledge and real-world application.
These partnerships are central to its operating model, bringing together complementary expertise across health, justice, environment, water and food science. They include long-standing service agreements with the Ministry of Health, New Zealand Police and others, underpinning the quality science needed to support New Zealand’s core public health and justice functions, and building the depth of knowledge enabling science-led advances in these areas.
In addition, PHF Science belongs to a wide network of technical and research experts at other Public Research Organisations, institutes and universities across New Zealand and internationally. These relationships enable access to a broad range of expertise, strengthening our insights, capability and impact.
Named examples illustrate this approach in practice: PHF Science co-designed the Lumi Drug Scan with New Zealand Police, providing a frontline tool that enables police to identify illicit drugs immediately in operational settings. PHF Science leads WellKiwis, the flagship Wellington-based community cohort study within the SHIVERS (Southern Hemisphere Influenza and Vaccine Effectiveness Research and Surveillance) programme. Through collaboration with Regional Public Health – Te Rito Wellington, Health New Zealand, the Universities of Otago and Auckland, and international research partners, this research advances understanding of influenza, other respiratory viruses, vaccine effectiveness and immunity, helping to inform public health policy and contribute to pandemic preparedness.
PHF Science has also developed a strong collaboration with the University of Auckland through its postgraduate programme in Forensic Science, helping to strengthen the connection between academic research and real-world application. With some 600 graduates over 30 years, this partnership provides students with valuable exposure to industry practice, scientific innovation, and practical forensic challenges, while also supporting the development of future specialists in the field.
