A-Story will leverage the Institute’s commitment to developing the next generation of storytellers by creating a direct pipeline for talent. Through its educational programs and workforce development initiatives, the Trilith Institute will feed emerging creators into A-Story Entertainment’s production pipeline, ensuring that local talent has the tools and opportunities to develop their projects and careers without leaving Georgia.

Trilith Institute – Leadership Spotlights

Jeffrey Stepakoff.jpg

Jeffrey Stepakoff
President and CEO, Trilith Institute

With a four-decade career spanning Hollywood studios, bestselling novels, cutting-edge digital storytelling, and educational innovation, Jeffrey Stepakoff is a rare creative force who has taken bold creative risks at every stage of his journey, and transformed entire industries in the process.

Raised in Atlanta, Georgia, Stepakoff graduated from Woodward Academy before earning a B.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication and a Master of Fine Arts in Playwriting from Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Drama. After completing his education, he moved to Hollywood and launched a career that would take him to the highest levels of the entertainment industry.

He began writing and producing for iconic television series like The Wonder Years and Dawson’s Creek, where he served as co-executive producer. Over the years, he earned “written by” or “story by” credits on 37 television episodes, wrote for 15 different series, and worked as a writer and producer on eight primetime or first-run cable staffs. He has been credited on more than 200 episodes of popular television. In addition to his work in series television, he wrote pilots for every major broadcast network and co-wrote the animated blockbusters Tarzan and Brother Bear for Disney.

A natural innovator, Stepakoff expanded his storytelling into digital and interactive media well before the streaming era. He held key creative roles at HarperCollins Interactive, Inscape (HBO/Time Warner), and Universal Studios. He also wrote the popular video game Quarterback Attack with Mike Ditka and helped pioneer internet-based storytelling with Perspectives, one of the earliest “webisodic” series developed for Paramount Studios’ digital division. One of his most profound creative risks came not in Hollywood, but in returning home.

Back in Georgia, Stepakoff became a tenured professor at Kennesaw State University, where he built the school’s first film and television writing program. He has also taught at Carnegie Mellon, UNC-Chapel Hill, Clemson, Notre Dame, City College of New York, and Emory University. In 2015, Governor Nathan Deal recruited him to serve as the founding Executive Director of the Georgia Film Academy, a statewide workforce program that trained more than 16,000 students and helped double the state’s production economy to over $4 billion. Today, as President and CEO of the Trilith Institute, Stepakoff is helping to shape the future of storytelling through an innovative educational model that trains, empowers, and retains writers, directors, and story artists within Georgia’s growing entertainment industry.

He is also an internationally bestselling novelist, with more than one million copies of his books in print across 20 languages. His nonfiction title, Billion-Dollar Kiss, is widely regarded as a definitive guide to the business of television writing. A highly sought-after speaker, Stepakoff regularly presents to media organizations, business groups, and academic institutions. He speaks on topics including the state of Georgia’s entertainment industry, education and workforce development, and the emerging creative economy. Honored by the Georgia General Assembly and named one of Atlanta’s Most Admired CEOs by the Atlanta Business Chronicle, Jeffrey Stepakoff’s career is a masterclass in creative risk. From the writers’ room to the classroom to the boardroom, he proves that betting on bold ideas and on yourself doesn’t just move stories forward. It moves culture.

Josh Lee
Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer, Trilith Institute

Josh Lee is an award-winning educator, entrepreneur, and media industry leader with nearly 20 years of experience. As co-founder and COO of Trilith Institute, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, he’s on a mission to cultivate the next generation of creators and storytellers. Since its launch in 2022, Lee has led Trilith’s rapid growth, expanding the organization from a small team to more than 20 experts in global entertainment and higher education, all committed to building a dynamic talent ecosystem in Georgia, positioning the state as a leader in the entertainment industry.

Josh’s journey began in his hometown of Atlanta, where he launched his media career as an intern at CNBC, later moving into roles at CNN and Headline News. After honing his skills in media production, Josh ventured into entrepreneurship in 2007, founding a successful video production company in Washington, DC. His client list read like a who’s who of political figures, including Hillary Clinton, Al Gore, and John Kerry. Shortly after going into business for himself, Josh co-founded tech startup BidZilla, and then turned a longtime hobby into a lucrative venture: he became a professional poker player, ranking 16th globally.

Returning to his roots in media in 2011, Josh revitalized the broadcast video production program at Northview High School in Atlanta, winning Teacher of the Year and helping his students earn state and national film championships. His passion for working with students deepened during his tenure as Station Manager for Fulton County Schools Television (FCSTV), where he served from 2014 to 2018. There, he launched and led an award-winning experiential internship program that connected students from across the district to real-world opportunities at major media outlets such as NBC and NPR. As Executive Director of all FCSTV content, he mentored student interns in professional media production while overseeing the live-streaming of key county events and directing original programming. His innovative approach helped inspire a new generation of creators while elevating the district’s visibility and engagement through student-led storytelling.

In 2017, Lee joined the Georgia Film Academy (GFA), where he led efforts to scale film education across the state, developing curricula and training over 550 educators. Under his guidance, GFA expanded to serve more than 15,000 students, created over 1,500 internships, and launched Georgia’s first Esports program, further solidifying its reputation as a leader in both film and gaming education.

Since joining Trilith Institute in 2022, Josh has been a key visionary, spearheading transformative educational initiatives designed to empower the next generation of creators in the entertainment industry. By fostering strategic partnerships, developing cutting-edge curricula, and leveraging his deep expertise in both media and education, he is helping shape the future of storytelling. Beyond his role at Trilith, Josh also serves as Chief Operating Officer of Content Talent South, a company he co-founded with Jeffrey Stepakoff. In this capacity, he champions emerging creatives, amplifying their voices within Georgia’s flourishing entertainment landscape.

Josh holds a BA in Media Studies and Journalism from Mercer University, a Master’s degree in Instructional Design & Technology from Georgia State, and an MBA from the University of Mississippi. He continued his leadership journey through Harvard University’s Credential of Leadership, Impact, and Management in Business (CLIMB) program.

Active in the community, Josh serves on the Board of Directors for Hope Givers, where he supports strategic planning for Emmy-award-winning content aimed at improving health, equity, and well-being. He is also a board member of the Media Education Foundation of Georgia (MEFGA), where he helps connect students, educators, and industry leaders through certification programs and job opportunities. In 2025, Josh was honored as a member of the Atlanta Business Chronicle’s 40 Under 40, a recognition of his remarkable leadership and enduring commitment to youth empowerment, media education, and innovation.
