The Client
Commonly known as Le Rouge, Detroit City FC (DCFC) is one of the more compelling growth stories in U.S. soccer. A professional USL Championship club, its roots are very different from those of a conventional sports franchise. Founded by Detroiters in 2012 as a community-driven club, DCFC has worked its way into the professional ranks while building an intensely loyal supporter culture that is now widely regarded as a model for community-first sports.
In 2028, the club will move into a new, purpose-built stadium in the heart of the city. The completion of this multi-year project will represent one of the most significant milestones in the club’s history, transforming DCFC’s commercial operation while elevating the matchday experience for supporters. It will further enhance the club’s national profile as a soccer organization on the ascendancy, both on and off the field.
The Challenge
With a new stadium on the horizon, DCFC faced the challenge that confronts every growing community enterprise: building a commercial engine without losing the soul and spirit that made the club exceptional in the first place.
The club needed a Chief Revenue Officer to lead all commercial operations and help guide the transition to its new home. Success required a leader who was both commercially rigorous and genuinely community-minded. Working against a tight timeline ahead of the stadium move, the CRO would be responsible for developing the ticketing, partnership, and revenue strategies needed to engage existing supporters, attract new audiences, and prepare the organization for a significantly larger and more sophisticated operation.
Equally important was the ability to manage a dynamic and demanding stakeholder environment. Investors, supporters, and local businesses and community groups each brought distinct interests, anxieties, and expectations to the table.
The ideal candidate would be capable of securing meaningful commercial growth while remaining a trusted and authentic representative of the values that have defined Detroit City FC since its founding.
The Solution
DCFC retained Boyden to recruit a Chief Revenue Officer at a pivotal moment in the club's evolution. As an organization experiencing rapid growth while remaining deeply connected to its community roots, the club required a search partner capable of balancing commercial leadership requirements with cultural considerations.
The search focused on identifying leaders with experience scaling revenue operations in sports, entertainment, and fan-based organizations where community engagement and brand loyalty play a critical role in long-term success. Throughout the process, a key insight emerged: many accomplished commercial executives could demonstrate revenue growth, but far fewer had built that success within organizations where stakeholder trust and community connection were equally important measures of performance.
Drawing candidates from across Major League Soccer, the USL, professional sports, live entertainment, and adjacent sectors, Boyden prioritized leaders whose track records reflected both commercial achievement and authentic community engagement. Finalists were evaluated not only on their ability to develop and execute a multi-year commercial strategy, but also on their capacity to earn trust across the club's diverse stakeholder groups and steward the culture that supporters value so deeply.
