The Client
Our client is a leading U.S.-based alternative investment manager with a multi-billion-dollar portfolio of credit-focused closed-end fund strategies, including direct lending, middle market corporate credit, and structured credit vehicles. The firm manages capital on behalf of a broad institutional investor base, including pensions, endowments, sovereign wealth funds, and insurance companies, across multiple regulated fund structures subject to public reporting requirements under the Investment Company Act.
The firm's finance organization is deeply integrated with its investment and portfolio management teams, with a valuation function that sits at the intersection of deal execution, regulatory compliance, and investor reporting. A seasoned, infrastructure-oriented culture places significant operational demands on its senior finance leaders.
The Challenge
The firm sought to hire a senior valuation leader to oversee all aspects of the quarterly, monthly, and event-driven valuation process across its illiquid and liquid credit portfolios. The role carried responsibility for a team of six and required deep expertise in ASC 820 fair value accounting, coordination of third-party valuation agents, preparation of Valuation Committee and Board-level materials, and stewardship of SOX 404 procedures.
The search was complicated by an exceptionally limited candidate market. The ideal hire required a rare combination of technical valuation expertise across complex credit instruments, including CLOs, BDCs, and middle market structures, alongside public company reporting experience (10-K, 10-Q, N-2), capital markets fluency, and the executive presence to operate credibly with investment committees and regulators. Candidates with experience spanning all three dimensions were exceptionally scarce.
The Solution
Boyden's Investment Management Practice conducted a targeted retained search focused on professionals with direct valuation leadership experience within alternative credit platforms, BDCs, or large-scale fund administrators with meaningful alternatives exposure. The search mapped senior valuation officers, controllers, and finance directors across both public and private credit managers, as well as Big Four professionals with dedicated financial services and alternatives practices.
Candidates were assessed on their demonstrated ASC 820 technical expertise, experience managing third-party valuation agent relationships, ownership of SEC reporting across investment company filings, leadership of SOX 404 programs, and ability to serve as trusted partners to investment professionals and senior stakeholders. Team leadership experience overseeing six or more professionals was a key requirement. Boyden's relationship-driven approach surfaced a shortlist of senior executives who were not actively seeking new opportunities, leveraging its 20-year network across the U.S. investment management ecosystem.
The Results
Boyden delivered a shortlist of four highly qualified candidates drawn from leading alternative credit managers, valuation vendors, and a global fund administrator with a significant alternatives portfolio. Each finalist offered a distinct combination of technical valuation expertise and finance leadership experience, providing the client with a strong range of highly qualified options during the final selection process.
The successful candidate brought more than 14 years of credit-focused valuation experience, including direct leadership of valuation processes across multiple closed-end fund structures, co-authorship of public company filings, and a proven track record of leading cross-functional teams through audit cycles and regulatory examinations. The individual transitioned seamlessly into the leadership role, establishing immediate credibility with the firm's investment, legal, finance, and investor relations teams.
The Impact
Boyden's placement strengthened a critical governance and control function, enhancing the firm's valuation infrastructure, reinforcing its regulatory and reporting framework, and supporting continued growth as assets under management and portfolio complexity expanded.
With an experienced valuation leader in place, the organization is well positioned to maintain disciplined valuation practices, strengthen collaboration across investment and finance functions, and meet the evolving expectations of investors, auditors, regulators, and other key stakeholders.
