The Client

Boyden’s Legal and Asset Management teams partnered with a very large sovereign wealth fund, investing globally to generate long-term returns for current and future generations. With a highly diversified portfolio across over 7,000 companies worldwide, bonds, real estate, and renewable infrastructure, it is one of the largest shareholders in global markets.

The Challenge

While expanding and also driving a new strategy in unlisted investments, the fund sought to appoint a senior lawyer to support the growth and new direction of investment activity, with a primary focus on UK and European transactions. The role required a commercially minded legal adviser able to provide end-to-end support across complex investment structures, including direct asset acquisitions, joint ventures, platforms, separately managed accounts and fund investments, while also advising on shareholder arrangements, operating agreements, regulatory matters and intra-group legal issues.

The position called for an individual with a strong academic and legal background, significant international transaction experience and the credibility to work proactively with investment teams in a fast-paced institutional environment. There was also an expectation to support innovation in legal processes through the use of AI and new technologies, helping ensure rigorous legal support, strong governance and continued growth in new and existing markets.

The Solution

Leveraging Boyden’s deep legal network across sovereign wealth funds, family offices, asset management, other funds and law firms, our team conducted a highly targeted search. We focused on a tight gene pool do deliver the precise blend of experience across the sectors.

We developed a specialised candidate pool of senior legal capability in unlisted investments who brought commercial acumen and strong stakeholder management skills. Through a rigorous evaluation process, Boyden identified the leaders with the expertise to step into this role and deliver quickly in a dynamic and growing business, who were also closely aligned to the clients long-term approach and values.

The Results

Having delivered and strong and diverse shortlist, Boyden successfully placed a highly experienced lawyer with a strong track record in unlisted investments, complex joint ventures and minority investments, not just in the UK, but across European and Asia Pacific markets.

The Impact

The appointment strengthened the client’s ability to execute complex unlisted investments with greater confidence, discipline and efficiency. By bringing high-calibre legal judgement to transactions, governance, regulatory matters and adviser oversight, the role enhanced the quality of investment decision-making and supported the organisation’s continued expansion across real estate and adjacent sectors such as renewable energy infrastructure. The appointment has helped reinforce a more scalable and forward-looking legal framework, enabling the business to navigate complexity, manage risk effectively and support long-term value creation across existing and new markets.
