Executive Brief
Chief Executive Officer
Creative BC
Key Opportunities and Challenges
After consulting with key stakeholders across Creative BC’s industry sectors, government partners, Board leadership, and internal team members, the following opportunities and challenges were identified for the new Chief Executive Officer:
Lead an Important Organizational Reset
Creative BC is at a pivotal moment in its evolution. Following a period of significant industry shifts, leadership transition, and sector-wide disruption, the new CEO will have a unique opportunity to help define the next chapter of the organization. Stakeholders consistently described this as a “reset moment” requiring a leader who can bring stability, clarity, transparency, and renewed confidence to the organization while preserving the strengths of an exceptionally talented and committed team.
Reinforce Trust Across the Sector
Creative BC serves multiple creative sectors, including film and television, interactive and digital media, music, publishing, and other cultural industries, each with unique needs and priorities. One of the most important priorities for the new CEO will be strengthening relationships with Creative BC’s stakeholders, particularly within the film and television sector. While Creative BC administers highly valued funding, tax credit, and industry development programs, several stakeholders expressed a desire for a more collaborative, transparent, and industry-connected leadership approach. The successful candidate will need to listen carefully, engage meaningfully, and demonstrate that Creative BC is a trusted partner committed to advancing the success of the sector.
Strengthen BC’s Competitive Position
British Columbia’s creative industries are operating in an increasingly competitive global environment. Stakeholders noted significant challenges facing the screen-based industries, including reduced production activity, shifting international investment patterns, and increasing competition from other jurisdictions. The new CEO will play a critical role in working with industry and levels of government to help strengthen British Columbia’s position as a leading destination for, and source of, creative investment, production, and talent.
Ensure Strategic and Operational Alignment
Creative BC occupies a unique position at the intersection of government, industry support, economic development, and program delivery. Its broad mandate and diverse stakeholder environment require a high degree of alignment across strategy, operations, and leadership. The new CEO’s arrival coincides with the development of the organization’s next strategic plan, creating an ideal opportunity to ensure that strategic priorities, organizational structure, leadership accountabilities, and operational delivery are fully aligned. This work will require a leader who can come up to speed quickly, build meaningful relationships, foster collaboration across a broad range of stakeholders and mandates, and provide the clarity necessary for the organization and its leadership team to execute with confidence and consistency.
Navigate Government Relationships and Future Funding
As a partially publicly funded organization, Creative BC’s future success depends on maintaining strong relationships with government while effectively demonstrating the value and impact of its programs. Stakeholders highlighted upcoming discussions regarding future funding, operating priorities, and organizational scope. The CEO will need to be an effective diplomat, communicator, and advocate, capable of building trust with government partners while supporting the needs of the sectors Creative BC serves.
Strengthen Organizational Effectiveness and Culture
Internally, Creative BC has experienced significant change in recent years. While there is a strong foundation in place with a talented and passionate team, the organization will benefit from a leader who can further strengthen organizational effectiveness by fostering clarity in roles and accountabilities, empowering senior leaders, and ensuring the leadership team is aligned around shared priorities and outcomes. Building on a culture of trust, collaboration, and excellence, the successful candidate will create an environment in which individuals and teams are equipped to perform at their highest potential while delivering exceptional service to British Columbia's creative sectors.
Ensure Smart Growth
Global contraction in the creative industries in recent years speaks to the next CEO of Creative BC emphasizing the need for realistic growth, sector stabilization, inclusive communication, a clear focus on maintaining BC's competitive edge and fostering collaboration across creative sectors. If positioned effectively, the organization has an opportunity to move further into the realm of being an increasingly strategic, proactive, and influential partner to both government and industry.
