About ABC Recycling

Introduction

ABC Recycling is Western Canada’s largest and most established metal recycling company. Family-owned and operated since 1912, the company has built a trusted reputation as a leader in the collection, processing, and resale of ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Headquartered in Burnaby, British Columbia, ABC operates across Western Canada and the Pacific Northwest of the United States, playing a vital role in the circular economy by transforming scrap into valuable resources that power industry, protect the environment, and support thriving communities.

Now in its fourth generation of family leadership, ABC Recycling continues to grow through strategic acquisitions, advanced infrastructure, and a commitment to responsible business practices. With over a century of experience behind it, the company remains focused on delivering forward-looking recycling solutions that contribute to a more sustainable future.

Vision

To be Western North America’s leading metal recycler, recognized for our people and our principles.

Services

ABC Recycling offers a full spectrum of metal recycling solutions, built on more than a century of operational expertise and a commitment to environmental responsibility.

Metal Recycling Services

From copper and aluminium to steel and other alloys, ABC Recycling processes and resells millions of pounds of ferrous and non-ferrous metals each year. The company works with a wide range of clients—from individual drop-offs to large industrial accounts—to divert waste from landfills and return recycled materials into the supply chain. By reducing the need for new resource extraction, ABC helps cut emissions and support cleaner communities.

Project & Industrial Services

ABC is uniquely equipped to manage large, complex recycling projects, including:

  • Commercial Metal Recycling

  • Decommissioning & Demolitions

  • End-of-Life Vehicle Processing

  • Household Scrap Drop-Offs

With strong project management capabilities, the company handles every aspect of delivery—from logistics and administration to safety oversight and regulatory compliance. ABC also brings significant resources to projects in remote and challenging environments, supported by strong partnerships with Indigenous communities and industry leaders.

No job is too large or too difficult. ABC is known for stepping in where others step back.

History

ABC Recycling’s story began in the early 1900s, when the Yochlowitz and Goldstick families arrived in Canada. In 1912, Joseph Yochlowitz launched a scrap peddling business in Vancouver. By 1949, Daniel Yochlowitz had opened ABC Salvage and Metal Company—deliberately choosing the name to be the first company listed in the phone book.

Throughout the decades, ABC evolved in step with the industry. Under Harold Yochlowitz’s leadership in the 1970s, the company shifted its focus from salvage to recycling, expanded direct relationships with steel mills, and invested in transportation infrastructure. By the 1980s, ABC was exporting to U.S. markets and had added non-ferrous recycling to its growing portfolio.

This steady momentum has continued through generations. The company has welcomed numerous family members into key leadership roles and expanded operations throughout British Columbia and Alberta—into communities such as Campbell River, Terrace, Kelowna, Surrey, Prince George, Fort St. John, Grande Prairie, Nanaimo, and Abbotsford. In 2024, ABC made its first U.S. acquisition with the addition of Skagit River Steel & Recycling in Burlington, Washington.

Today, ABC Recycling continues to honor its roots while driving industry leadership across borders. See a timeline of ABC’s full history here.
