Executive Brief

President
British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT)

September 2022

Essence of the Opportunity

The British Columbia Institute of Technology acknowledges that their campuses are located on the unceded traditional territories of the Coast Salish Nations of xwməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Swx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səl̓ilwətaɁɬ (Tsleil-Waututh)

For close to 60 years, the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) has been delivering flexible, relevant, and future-proof education that prepares learners to provide applied solutions to industry challenges – across BC and around the world. Widely recognized as a provincial leader by industry partners for its innovation, flexibility, and relevance, BCIT is one of Canada’s largest polytechnics, enrolling close to 50,000 students annually.

BCIT equips graduates to anticipate and conquer the complex challenges of our day and plays a unique role in the educational landscape of British Columbia (BC). BCIT programs are developed through close consultation with industry, and delivered by instructors who have direct, hands-on experience in their fields. Students gain the technical skills and real-world experience needed to enter the workforce job-ready. Through its unique applied education model, BCIT is connecting education, industry, and government to power provincial recovery and resilience.

Following the retirement of former President Kathy Kinloch in June 2022, the Institute is seeking its next President. Under Kinloch’s leadership, BCIT established a strategic vision for Indigenous Initiatives and Partnerships, led sustainability initiatives both on and off-campus that have been recognized by the United Nations, and advanced an ambitious campus renewal plan that includes the new BCIT Health Sciences Centre, the Tech Collider at the BCIT Downtown Campus, expanded student housing, and the comprehensive BCIT Trades and Technology Complex. BCIT is seeking its next President to continue leading the Institute through a time of transformation and growth.

BCIT is at a critical stage in its development and the next President will lead an Institute which has leveraged the considerable talents of its community to innovate, raise its profile, rebuild its infrastructure, internationalize, and solidify its partnerships. Societal and environmental trends will continue to demand more from post-secondary institutions. As Canada’s preeminent polytechnic, BCIT must remain agile, at the vanguard of change, with a President who understands how education will prepare tomorrow’s workforce.

The President should be a visionary leader who possesses the collaborative skills, presence, and wherewithal to inspire BCIT’s communities and partners. The ideal candidate effectively manages at both the strategic and operational levels, convening Board, faculty, staff, students, industry, government, and external communities to achieve great things. Leading transparently and with humility, they should live with a sense of integrity that aligns with BCIT’s mission and vision. Meaningful engagement with Truth and Reconciliation, and equity, diversity, and inclusion is expected. The President should possess the business acumen, innovative spirit, global view, policy expertise, agility, and forward thinking vision required to preserve and enhance the Institute’s reputation locally, nationally, and globally.

This is an opportunity for a dynamic leader to shepherd BCIT through continued growth and transformation. This role will be based out of BCIT’s main campus in Burnaby, BC.

Equity, diversity, and inclusion are core values for the British Columbia Institute of Technology. Therefore, BCIT encourages applications from all qualified individuals, including women, Indigenous people, persons with disabilities, visible minorities, people of all sexual orientations and gender identities and expressions, and others who may contribute to the further diversification of the Institute.
